Autumn Fair has launched the latest episode of its Retail Makeover Mission, showcasing the transformation of independent retailer OSO Boutique in Salisbury, led by retail expert Deryane Tadd, founder of award-winning boutique The Dressing Room in St Albans, Herts
Following hundreds of inspiring applications from independent retailers across the UK, two businesses were selected to receive a complete retail transformation from Autumn Fair’s expert Retail Task Team. The project brings together leading retail specialists to help independent stores strengthen their businesses across visual merchandising, branding, customer experience and buying strategy.
The new episode follows Deryane as she invites Katie Gibbs, owner of OSO Boutique, into The Dressing Room, for an immersive, behind-the-scenes mentoring experience. Drawing on over 20 years in retail, Deryane shares practical, real-world advice in her own store environment, offering Katie a rare insight into what makes a successful independent boutique. From improving store layout and merchandising to refining brand storytelling and customer engagement, the experience offers practical insights for retailers navigating today’s challenging trading environment.
Katie Gibbs, owner of OSO Boutique said, “Working with Deryane taught me that even as a small business, you have to think and behave like a big brand. That applies to everything from how your store looks and feels, to how products are displayed and the journey customers take through the shop.’’
Alongside the episode, Autumn Fair has released a free downloadable retail toolkit featuring practical guidance and top tips from Deryane Tadd on building a thriving fashion retail business.
“Retail is much more than simply selling products,” said Deryane, Retail Makeover Mission expert task team member. “It’s about creating a complete business that puts the customer at the heart of everything you do, while building a team and environment that supports growth and creativity.
“Everything we share in the toolkit comes from real-life experience, what works in practice, what builds consistency and what helps independent retailers grow sustainably.”
One key principle highlighted in the toolkit is the importance of thoughtful store design and customer flow, ensuring customers can naturally explore a store while discovering new products and experiences. It also encourages retailers to tell the story behind every product, helping shoppers connect more deeply with brands and purchases.
The Retail Makeover Mission was inspired by the challenges facing independent retail and the desire to support businesses that bring creativity and personality to the UK high street. Autumn Fair’s expert Retail Makeover Mission Task Team worked directly with the winning retailers to transform key areas of their businesses including:
- Visual merchandising and store design
- Customer experience and store flow
- Branding and digital presence
- Marketing and customer loyalty
- Buying strategies and product curation
- Operational efficiency.
The video series captures the transformation in real time, offering behind-the-scenes insight and practical advice for retailers looking to evolve their own businesses.
Matthew Mein, event director of Autumn Fair, said, “This project is about celebrating the passion and resilience of independent retailers. These businesses are the heart of our high streets and communities, and Retail Makeover Mission shows what’s possible when expertise, creativity and determination come together.”
