Independent retailers must keep evolving and innovating to survive and thrive, according to former British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) President John Jones

Jones, of Philip Morris & Son, has stepped down after two years as President of Bira, which works with more than 6,000 independent retailers across the UK. Karen Forret of Wilkies Trading took over the role at Bira’s AGM this month.

It’s been a huge honour to serve as President of Bira. For independent retailers, the lack of growth in the economy and the political decisions forced upon us have not made it an easy two years. These challenges show more than ever why our sector needs an organisation like Bira to collectively achieve what we can’t do individually.

Despite the pressures facing the sector, he remains optimistic about the future of the high street.

“People value the sense of place and community the high street provides, as well as the knowledge and service an independent retailer offers. We need genuine business rates reform and an overhaul of the planning rules to let the high street thrive again, but it will always be there,” he said.

Jones added: “Small businesses can be more nimble than their bigger counterparts, and we need to use that to our advantage. Philip Morris & Son is 180 years old, but the business as it is now in no way resembles the business it was originally. I think the key to surviving and thriving is evolving.”

Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre said: “On behalf of everyone at Bira, I want to thank John for everything he has given to the role over the last two years. He has led us through a really tough period for independent retail, always with the interests of members at heart, and the launch of the forum will be a lasting part of his legacy. I’m delighted he will remain involved as Karen takes on the role.”
