Royal Mail is set to issue a set of stamps to celebrate the diverse range of wild and domesticated ducks found in the UK
The charming stamp images showcase 10 duck species and breeds found throughout the UK. Featured are the: Goosander; Indian Runner; Mallard Duckling; Mandarin; Call; Aylesbury; Pintail; Silver Appleyard; Shelduck; and the Eider.
Royal Mail worked with Steve Ormerod, Professor of Ecology, Water Research Institute/Cardiff School of Biosciences, Cardiff University, and waterfowl author, Dr Chris Ashton, on the stamp issue.
If it quacks like a duck…
There are more than 120 species of duck worldwide, with 22 found in the UK. These include diving, dabbling, and perching ducks, which are closely associated with a range of aquatic habitats – from rivers and wetlands to coastal estuaries.
Ducks are a familiar and symbolic presence in these environments, with their seasonal movements and distinctive calls contributing to the character and rhythm of the British landscape. Some species are resident year-round, while others migrate to and from northern breeding grounds, making the UK an important wintering site for several internationally significant populations.
Male ducks are typically more colourful and patterned than females, whose more muted plumage helps them stay hidden while nesting. The mallard, the world’s most common duck, is widespread across the UK and is the ancestor of most domesticated duck breeds. Over time, ducks have been bred for a variety of purposes – from food production to pest control and ornamental display.
Steve Ormerod, Professor of Ecology, Water Research Institute/Cardiff School of Biosciences, Cardiff University, said: “The UK’s wild ducks are among the most elegant of all our birds. Their diversity of life histories, behaviours and calls evokes the character of habitats ranging from local ponds, lochans and lakes to rivers, wetlands and coasts. Ducks have also played a central role in the human history of animal domestication – for example for food, pest control or as protected ‘rare breeds’. This spectrum from cultural connection to wilderness is celebrated in this beautiful collection of Royal Mail stamps.”
The stamps, and a range of collectible products, are available to pre-order at www.royalmail.com/ducks. A Presentation Pack including all 10 stamps is priced at £13.75. The stamps go on general sale from 11 September.
