New Moonpig research reveals a shift towards smaller, more meaningful gestures as consumers rethink celebrations and gifting habits
The era of the extravagant birthday celebration could be changing, with new research from Moonpig revealing that Brits are increasingly turning towards more personal, affordable and meaningful ways to celebrate.
The study highlights a significant shift in consumer spending and gifting habits, as people look to reduce financial pressure and move away from expensive social commitments in favour of smaller gestures that help maintain connections.
According to the research, 63% of Brits now value receiving a physical card in the post more than a big party or expensive meal, highlighting the continued importance of thoughtful, traditional gifting in an increasingly digital world.
The findings also show that 56% prefer celebrating birthdays with cards or small tokens rather than extravagant gestures, while 62% are actively scaling back social commitments to save money or manage their budgets.
Financial pressures are playing a key role in changing attitudes towards celebrations, with 34% of Brits admitting they feel pressure to keep up with friends financially, whether through attending expensive events, buying larger gifts or matching the spending habits of their social circles.
Instead, consumers are increasingly prioritising smaller acts of thoughtfulness. More than half (51%) said that dropping off a favourite snack is more meaningful than attending a large social event, while “just because” gifting – sending a card or small note simply to let someone know they are being thought of – is becoming a preferred way to stay connected without the cost of a night out.
The research suggests that consumers are placing greater value on the sentiment behind a gift rather than its price tag, with cards and small gestures continuing to play an important role in maintaining relationships.
Moonpig’s findings reflect a wider shift in consumer behaviour, as people balance financial pressures with the desire to celebrate life’s important moments.
With birthdays, milestones and everyday occasions still providing opportunities to connect, the research highlights how meaningful gifting does not need to be extravagant to make an impact.
